About the Book

Alpine Ani is a heartwarming tale that follows Ani, a rare high-alpine critter called an ili pika, as she embarks on a mountain adventure to experience snow and skiing for the first time. Along the way, animal friends help her navigate the mountains and share valuable life lessons.

Author’s Note

Ili pikas are real animals, discovered only recently, and are already endangered due to rising temperatures in their mountain home. I hope this story brings attention to the ili pika and the changes brought on by a warming world. But at the same time, the book highlights the universal joys of being with friends . . . and outside . . . and in the snow . . . and last, but certainly not least, the fun sports of skiing and snowboarding.

Learn More About the Ili Pika & Its Habitat

Meet the Ili Pika

The ili pika is one of the rarest mammals in the world, with a small population surviving high in the mountains of Asia. With their teddy bear-like faces and shy nature, these adorable creatures are often referred to as “magic rabbits.” But ili pikas are more than just cute — they are a powerful symbol of how climate change is impacting mountain ecosystems. As the snow retreats higher each year, ili pikas face increasing challenges to find food and places to live.

The Snow Lotus Connection

In Alpine Ani, you’ll encounter the snow lotus, a rare and important plant in Ani’s world. These beautiful flowers thrive in high-altitude, snowy habitats, just like Ani. But they’re also facing challenges from climate change and have even begun to evolve to hide from human harvesters.

Why This Story Matters

Skiing and snowboarding depend on the same cold temperature that ili pikas and snow lotuses need to thrive. Protecting animals like the ili pika means protecting the habitats they call home—places that are also our favorite winter playgrounds. By sharing Ani’s story, we aim to inspire young readers to appreciate these winter habitats and understand the broader impacts of climate change.
